Set up in 2001, the .NAME domain name extension is the only one supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other labels people are famous by. At first, just 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to reserve john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed 3rd-level domains remained online.
